A Dialogue on Workplace Fairness

SCWO had the pleasure of hosting Minister of State for Manpower, Ms Gan Siow Huang, in an intimate dialogue on workplace fairness with our esteemed members and allies at the National Design Centre on October 6, 2023.

We discussed the upcoming Workplace Fairness Legislation, which sets out to provide women with a stronger legal recourse to challenge discriminatory actions at the workplace. Without the fear of repercussions and with the assurance of fair outcomes, victims of discrimination will be empowered to step forward, raise their grievances and seek help, and women will be more protected at every stage of employment.

The event opened with a welcome address by SCWO’s President, Ms Junie Foo, highlighting the importance of prioritising education and engagement as critical strategies to shift mindsets towards building progressive and inclusive workplaces for all. Ms Gan echoed this sentiment in her opening remarks as she reiterated the whole-of-society effort needed to support the legislation for us to see fair and just environments not only in the workplace, but in every aspect of the community.

The dialogue, moderated by Ms Foo, was joined by Ms Gan herself alongside Ms Low Peck Kem, President of the Asia-Pacific Federation of Human Resources Management and Member of the Tripartite Committee on Workplace Fairness. The audience brought to attention topics such as discrimination and harassment against gender, race and age, flexible work arrangements, and balancing their jobs with caregiving duties.
