SCWO warmly welcomes President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Patron Ms. Jane Ittogi to the SCWO Centre on Waterloo Street

SCWO8-min

We were excited to welcome President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and SCWO Patron Ms. Jane Ittogi for a visit to our centre on Waterloo Street, together with Minister of State for Social and Family Development, Ms Sun Xueling.

While they learned about the work that we do as the national coordinating body for women’s organisations in Singapore, the candid exchange was invigorating with insightful ideas from both President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Ms Jane Ittogi on how we can continue our efforts to ensure equal space, equal voice, and equal worth for women in every aspect of society.

The visit by our President and Ms Jane Ittogi has motivated and empowered us to continue amplifying the needs of women in Singapore, within society, communities, workplaces and homes.

As we further the cause of women in Singapore, let us stand together, embracing equity as a society, and bringing about positive change!

SCWO: Empowering Women and Fostering Gender Equality

The Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations, established in 1980, has been at the forefront of championing women’s rights and gender equality in Singapore. As an umbrella body for over 70 women’s organisations to date, SCWO plays a pivotal role in coordinating efforts and promoting collaboration among these groups to drive change and create a more inclusive society.

Equal Space: Ensuring A Safe Environment for Women

One of our primary goals is to ensure that women feel safe, wherever they are and are free to live their lives as they choose without the threats of discrimination, harassment, sexual assault and violence, ultimately contributing to a more just and equitable world. We are committed to working diligently to create an equal space that ensures women are protected from harm, and empowered to thrive in all aspects of life.

Equal Voice: Amplifying Women’s Voices

Another crucial aspect of our work is ensuring that women have an equal voice in decision-making processes at all levels of society. We believe that diverse perspectives lead to better decision-making and more equitable outcomes. We believe that there is a need for women’s representation in politics and corporate boardrooms, as well as the importance of amplifying women’s voices through advocacy and awareness campaigns. We’re dedicated to promoting women’s leadership in public and private sectors to break down the barriers that have traditionally hindered their participation.

Equal Worth: Recognising Women’s Contributions

SCWO is committed to recognising and celebrating women’s contributions to society. We firmly believe that women’s work, both paid and unpaid, should be acknowledged and valued equally.

Collaboration for a Gender-Equal Singapore

Collaboration and cooperation among various stakeholders are vital to achieving these goals of diversity, equity and inclusion, and we are optimistic about the positive changes we can collectively bring about. Together, we can create a gender-equal Singapore where every woman has the opportunity to thrive and contribute her unique skills and talents to the betterment of our society.
