MSC Talk for Social Service Professionals on Understanding Maintenance Processes

The MSC Talk was conducted virtually and targeted social service professionals to be equipped with the necessary information in their work with their respective clients.

The topic was about understanding the processes for Fresh Maintenance Applications and the Enforcement of Maintenance Applications. It covered the process flow of maintenance applications and the factors that the Family Justice Court considers when awarding maintenance. MSC invited Ms. Thian Wen Yi to be the guest speaker as a continuation of the initial talk in Jan.

 

 

Ms. Thian Wen Yi is a partner at Harry Elias Partnership under the Family and Divorce Practice Group. She has acted as lead counsel in many contentious disputes over custody, care and control, access, maintenance, and division of matrimonial assets.

Ms Thian was named a Recommended Practitioner in the 2021 and 2022 editions of Doyles Guide’s Singapore Family and Divorce Leading Lawyers. She was also listed in the 2021 edition of Singapore’s 18 most influential lawyers aged 40 and under by Singapore Business Review. As a member of the Singapore Association of Women Lawyers, Ms Thian volunteers at the legal clinics where she gives free legal advice to women who cannot afford a lawyer.

She also provides pro bono legal services for needy persons under the auspices of the Law Society’s Ad Hoc Pro Bono Referral Scheme and Legal Aid Bureau’s panel of assigned solicitors.

 

A total of 38 participants, mainly counsellors and social workers from various FSCs, attended the talk. The feedback received from participants was that the talk was helpful and informative. There was a consensus that the talk was engaging and pleasant too.
