Preparing for Ageing and Retirement

Organised by SCWO and Singapore Management University

Are Singaporeans Prepared for Retirement? The consensus is that we aren’t. Just as we had to look for career guidance during our early years, now we are looking for retirement guidance as we age.

Join us for a discussion on Ageing and Retirement Preparedness with health economist Professor Rhema Vaithianathan from the Centre for Research on the Economics of Ageing (CREA) of Singapore Management University (SMU)

With that in mind, a team of researchers and international collaborators at Singapore Management University (SMU) is engaged in a five-year programme of research to understand the situation of ageing Singaporeans and evaluate policies to improve well-being in retirement. The research was selected for funding by the Ministry of Education which awarded SMU a Tier 3 grant, the first ever for a social science project.

Home for this research is the Centre for Research on the Economics of Ageing (CREA) which was established in 2014 under SMU’s School of Economics. To provide information for the research, CREA has been conducting a monthly survey since August 2015. As of today, 19 waves of the survey have been completed with more than 8,000 responses each month.

The survey information is certainly valuable for analysing issues and policies but CREA would also be keen to hear the voices of the people who are experiencing or anticipating retirement and who are affected by these policies. For this reason, CREA would like to hear from you and get your feedback on what you think about the priorities for research and policy in this area.

The speaker for the presentation is health economist Professor Rhema Vaithianathan, who is a Co-Principal Investigator for the research programme.

The topics for the presentation are:

  • The Singapore Life Panel®: Who are we surveying and why?
  • What have we learned so far about the health, housing and spending of middle-aged and older Singaporeans?
