Make connections with people who can help.  Friends, family, social workers, counsellors.  You may need to connect with the police and the Family Justice Courts to make a police report or apply for Personal Protection Order.

  1. Seeking Medical Attention if you have sustained physical injuries
    • Call 995, for emergency medical assistance
    • Go to a nearby clinic or you can go to http://www.hospitals.sg/hospitals to find a general or community hospital to get checked
    • Even if you do not wish to take action against the perpetrator, it is advisable that you have your injuries treated and have a medical documentation as evidence of the abuse.[1]
    • Collect photographs of injuries, medical records and text messages of abuse as evidence
    • If you are applying for a Personal Protection Order (PPO) or a referral to a crisis shelter, your medical report would be necessary for the Court.

  4. Develop a Safety Plan
    • Step 1: Pack an Emergency Kit (to be placed at a safe space such as a friend’s or a relative’s place)
      • Important documents for self and children (Originals/Copies)
      • Government-issued identification and birth certificates
      • Passports and work permits
      • Any form of court orders, medical reports and police reports
      • Insurance papers for health
      • Marriage, divorce, or separation papers
      • Bank books
      • Daily Amenities
      • Medication
      • Keys for the house, deposit box, car, office, etc.
      • Money- Cash will be more preferred to be used than credit/debit cards as some perpetrators may trace your whereabouts using your spending and/or withdrawal information.
      • Address book of important contact numbers
      • Public transportation cards
      • Public Assistance cards
      • Clothing- bring extra sets
      • Food
      • Toiletries
    • Step 2: Prior to your departure from the house
      • Be prepared with an address book of important contact numbers with you all the time- Police, trusted friends and family contact numbers, social workers’ numbers, emergency hotlines, shelter hotlines, etc.)
      • Make arrangement to stay with someone you trust and is not known by the perpetrator
      • Identify possible safety exits of your house- doors, lifts, staircases and devise an exit route for both your children and yourself
      • Educate your children to dial 999 or 995 in an event of emergency
      • Hide all sharp objects and potential weapons in the home
      • Hide the emergency kit at a friend’s or relative’s place
        Prepare sufficient money with you
    • Step 3: After your departure from the house
      • Seek legal protection and maintenance order
      • Keep your friends and family in the loop about the PPO and tell them not to disclose your whereabouts (staying address, office, facilities that your children and yourself frequent) to the perpetrator and who has the permission to have access to your children
      • Change the locks of your current residence
      • If the perpetrator violates the Protection Order, please call the 999 for the Police immediately.
