SCWO International Women's Day Celebration 2012 - Connecting for Success

International Women's Day (IWD) has always been a significant fixture in the SCWO calendar, and this March 2012, we celebrated it by holding a series of events with the overarching theme of "Connecting for Success".

National Young Women Leaders Day Symposium (NYWLD)

SCWO kicked off the commemoration of IWD with the National Young Women Leaders Day 2012 Symposium on 3 March in partnership with Halogen Foundation Singapore. Held at the Kallang Theatre, this all-women event aimed to inspire and empower young women to rise up and play more significant leadership roles in Singapore.

SCWO-NUS Challenge Shield – Debating Tournament

Encouraged by the success in its inaugural year in 2011, SCWO continued the Debating Tournament in collaboration with NUS Debate Club to organise the SCWO-NUS Challenge Shield.

The tournament, held on 10-11 March, saw debaters from top local and regional (Thailand, Malaysia and Philippines) secondary schools and junior colleges battling it out over motions with particular focus on gender issues and issues facing women in the modern age. Ms Jane Horan, SCWO board member and Chairperson of the debating tournament, welcomed all the debaters in her opening address and officially declared the tournament open.

SCWO IWD 2012 Celebration Dinner

On 20 March at the Goodwood Park Hotel, we welcomed our new patron, Mrs Mary Tan, wife of President Tony Tan as our Guest of Honour. The evening’s festivities commenced with our patron meeting, for the first time, presidents and representatives from our member organisations who lined the red carpet to greet her and be introduced by our President, Mrs Laura Hwang.

This year, we completed the SCWO Founders Circle with 5 new members (Mrs Alison Henwood, Dr Lee Oi Kum, Ms Anastasia Ling, Mdm Ng Hong and Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon) who were presented with their tokens of appreciation by Mrs Mary Tan. Mrs Tan also presided over the Founders Circle Dedication Ceremony where the plaque was officially unveiled.

SCWO Celebrates International Women's Day 2011

2011 marks a very special year for women's organisations worldwide as it is Global Centenary of International Women’s Day. SCWO celebrated this important milestone in the progress of women to fair partnership in family, social, business and political life with a theme dedicated to “Creating the Future – Women in Society, Economy & Government”.

In conjunction with the UN declaration of 2011 being the Year of the Youth, SCWO engaged the youths of Singapore by organising the inaugural SCWO Debating Tournament, in partnership with the Singapore Management University (SMU) Debating Society, an inter-tertiary Debate focused on women-centric motions from 25-27 February.

Our Celebration Dinner on 9 March at the Regent Hotel honoured our Patron, Mrs SR Nathan for 10 years of patronage with a handmade quilt of our IWD events over the decade. An awards ceremony was also held for the winning and runner up teams of the debating competition with a speech made by the Best Speaker of the tournament.  The biggest draw of the evening was the first ever screening of the SCWO-commissioned video We Are 100featuring women from our past, present and future, outlining their triumphs and tribulations through the years. It is a historical documentary of the progress of Singapore Women for the last 100 years.

We concluded our IWD Celebrations with the re-painting of the SCWO Mural on 19 March with the help of Social Creatives. A plethora of social community groups –members of SCWO Member Organisations, Young PAP and Fuchun Executive Committee, as well as troops from the USA Girl Scouts in Singapore and volunteers from SG Cares and Social Creatives – gathered to paint and soak in the community spirit and camaraderie.

Held in conjunction with International Women’s Month, this Gala celebration was set to be a night of sparkling jewels, glitz and glamour, presided over by Mrs S R Nathan, the Guest-of-Honour and Patron of SCWO.

There were special song and dance performances by our members, affiliates and supporters, and the highlight of the evening where two outstanding ladies were inducted to our Wall of Fame, joining the ranks of historical female figures in Singapore. Women: Engines of Growth

Women’s contributions in stimulating the growth of Singapore have not only been limited in the economic sector but also in the field of sports and entertainment. Sportswomen have won medals for our nations and women singers, writers, artists and entertainers have won accolades to spur the growth of their respective industries and made Singapore proud.

SCWO celebrated the achievements by showcasing successful and talented women entrepreneurs, leaders, engineers, scientists, bankers and doctors the talk is aimed at inspiring young women and those in middle management. Prominent women were invited to speak on a panel on each of the different sectors and provide lessons of how they broke the gender stereotypes and glass ceiling, managed to find the right work and life harmony and made their way to the top.

In-Gear Party
The In-Gear party provided a platform for women of all background, age and race to come together to celebrate International Women’s Day. It was not just a platform to showcase the talented women but also to celebrate women and being woman.
