Launch of SCWO Wall of Fame
On 22 October 2005, SCWO launched our Wall of Fame and had an open house to honour 6 remarkable women who had made a difference in advancing the status and condition of women in Singapore.

The 6 women honored were, Mrs. Shirin Fozdar, Mrs. Maria Dyer, Hajjah Fatimah, Mrs. Elizabeth Choy, Mrs. Seow Peck Leng and Mdm. Chan Choy Siong. Two of the six women are still alive and it was an honour to be graced by Mrs. Elizabeth Choy’s presence. Family members of the remaining 5 women were present on their behalf.

The Wall of Fame has been placed on a front wall, by the entrance foyer of the SCWO building. It consists of 6 individual panels as well as a large panel, which is a montage of pictures depicting the accomplishments of these 6 women.

With the arrival of our Guest of Honor, Ms. Claire Chiang, the programme started at 2.15pm. Mrs Tisa Ng, SCWO’s President gave a welcome speech starting with a brief introduction of SCWO as well as the facilities available at the SCWO Centre. She then went onto highlight the significance of the 6 women honored and the roles they played in shaping past, present and future of the women’s movement in Singapore and noted that with the Wall of Fame, SCWO hopes to make concrete the achievements of these six women so that their legacies will be remembered. The achievements of these pioneers were further emphasized by the GOH, Mrs Claire Chiang whose address elaborated on how these women paved the way for equality in Singapore and Claire added that humanity still needed to find the balance in gender equality.

Plaques were presented to the families of the six ladies present. Accepting on behalf of Shirin Fozdar was her son Jamshed Fozdar; for Maria Dyer, Mrs. Sylvia Khoo, vice-principal of St. Margaret’s Secondary School.  Mr. Syed Alsagoff, from the Alsagoff Arab School, accepted on behalf of Hajjah Fatimah, Mr. Ong Pang Boon for his spouse, Madam Chan Choy Siong and Mr. Peter Seow, son of Mrs. Seow Peck Leng.

3 wonderful tributes to the six women were presented, starting with a 5-minute slide show, which brought the audience through a nostalgic journey of the women’s individual achievements.

The audience was then treated to a moving performance by Ms. Nora Samosir who gave a monologue which was an excerpt from the play Separation 40 by Haresh Sharma. The extract which was based on the separation of Malaysia and Singapore, captured and conveyed the flavour of feistiness and determination of the pioneering women. Ms Vivian Bacinello, performed the song I Am Woman and that got the crowd clapping and singing along.

After the awards presentation, Ms. Claire Chiang then led the way down to the ground floor to view the new SCWO Wall of Fame. Guests then proceeded to the beautiful reception where they also were invited to take a tour of the SCWO building.
