Maribel Portela

She was born in 1960 in Mexico City and attended the Visual Arts School at the ENAP from UNAM. She has participated in numerous individual and collective exhibitions in Mexico and internationally.  In 1994, she was awarded the prestigious FONCA scholarship, as well as awards from the National Auditorium Gallery in Mexico City (1987) and the José Luis Cuevas’ Museum (1998).

She participated in Washington at Mexico’s Culture Institute, ‘Dream of Earth: 21st Century Tendencies in Mexican Sculpture’. Her sculptures concentrate on elements related to technique, tradition, religion, pre Hispanic symbols and sacred cultures. Her ceramic sculptures reflect a primitive, spontaneous, natural and symmetric being; full of fears, wishes, myths and dreams. Her work is represented by Aldo Castillo’s Gallery in Chicago.
